- Air out your sweat soaked BJJ Gi and rashguard
- Do not roll it into a ball and stuff it in your gym bag after class (bacteria loves damp, dark places)
- If you notice any blood, treat the area using hydrogen peroxide and a toothbrush to prevent staining
- Throw it in the laundry immediately, after every use
- Add ¼ cup of distilled white vinegar; vinegar neutralizes the smell
- Wash your gi and rashguard inside out, in cold water with similar colors, do not wash with any other laundry
- Warm or hot water will shrink your gi
- Do not wash rashguards with any velcro, this will cause pulling
- Tie the drawstrings on your gi pants before washing to prevent a tangled mess
- Immediately hang to dry, back of chairs works great for gi tops and helps keep the shape
- The dryer will shrink your gi
- Don’t forget to wash your belt! There is a long standing BJJ debate regarding the washing of belts; superstition says it washes away your BJJ knowledge…
For gloves and shinguards:
- Use sanitizer wipes or disinfection spray immediately
- Wipe it down with a dry towel
- Wipe it down with alcohol based cleaner, leather cleaner also works great
- Wipe it down with a dry towel again
- Leave in the sunlight to dry
- Leave a dryer sheet in each glove for a long lasting fresh smell
And don’t forget to wash that stinky gym bag too! Most can be thrown right in the wash.
There will come a time when all good things must come to an end and you must replace your gear. See the front desk to purchase new gis, rashguards, gloves, and shinguards!
Keep the yourself (and the gym) fresh and clean…you filthy animals.
