Have you been thinking about training MMA but not sure where to start? Do you have aspirations of becoming an MMA fighter? Or maybe you’re just looking for a new way to get in shape, build confidence, and challenge yourself mentally and physically. Whether you’re dreaming of stepping into the cage one day or simply want to train like a fighter, getting started in MMA can be one of the most rewarding decisions you ever make.
At High Altitude Martial Arts, we specialize in helping people at every stage of their journey—from complete beginners to seasoned competitors. You don’t need any experience to begin, just the willingness to show up, work hard, and learn. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to take your first step into MMA training the right way.
MMA is a combination of several disciplines. At High Altitude, we recommend starting with the following:
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Gi + No-Gi)
Learn grappling, submissions, and ground control - Striking
Build striking skills with punches, kicks, knees, and elbows - Intro to MMA
Once you get some experience in BJJ and kickboxing, our Intro to MMA class teaches you how to blend striking, takedowns, and ground work.
You don’t need to train every day. We recommend:
- 3 classes per week to start allowing you days for rest and recovery
- Mix striking and grappling to build a balanced foundation
- Ask questions and go at your own pace—our coaches and teammates are here to help
Here’s a general idea of how long it takes to feel comfortable:
- 1–3 weeks: Learn the basics, meet the team, shake off nerves
- 2-4 months: Start to build confidence, improve fitness, and understand techniques
- 6+ months: You’ll feel like an athlete. You might even start sparring or think about competition
High Altitude Martial Arts is the perfect place for you to start or continue your MMA journey. We help top contenders, rising stars, and those just beginning their journeys. There is not easy road or shortcuts to get to fight in the cage. It will take time and dedication. It takes patience and perseverance. You need to love the journey because it is a long commitment but worth it once you achieve your dreams!
