At High Altitude Martial Arts, we’re proud to offer a full Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program for kids—one that includes both Gi and No-Gi training. If you’re a parent wondering what No-Gi is all about and how it’s different from traditional Gi Jiu Jitsu, we’ve got you covered.
Gi vs. No-Gi: What’s the Difference?
In Gi Jiu Jitsu, students wear the traditional kimono-style uniform, complete with jacket, pants, and belt. Techniques often involve grabbing the fabric to control and submit opponents.
In No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, students train in a rash guard and athletic shorts and spats—no jacket, no pants to grip. The techniques rely more on body position, leverage, and quick transitions.
How No-Gi Benefits Our Students
Here at High Altitude Martial Arts, we’ve found that training both Gi and No-Gi builds better, more well-rounded grapplers. No-Gi classes tend to be faster-paced and teach kids how to control an opponent without relying on grips.
Benefits of No-Gi training include:
- Improved agility and reaction time
- Better body awareness and control
- Preparation for real-life self-defense scenarios
- Enhanced adaptability between grappling styles
What Should My Child Wear to No-Gi Class?
- A rash guard or fitted athletic shirt
- Athletic shorts (no zippers or pockets for safety) or leggings
- Spats
- A mouthguard is always encouraged
We also have High Altitude rash guards and spats available at the gym!
Do They Still Need to Train in the Gi
Yes! While No-Gi is a valuable part of our program, we strongly encourage kids to train in both styles. At High Altitude, our youth BJJ program blends Gi and No-Gi training throughout the week to help students:
- Grasp a wider range of techniques
- Build discipline and understanding of traditional martial arts etiquette
- Stay engaged with variety in training
No-Gi is a fun, challenging, and essential part of Jiu Jitsu—and at High Altitude Martial Arts, we make sure it’s taught in a way that’s safe, supportive, and engaging for kids of all levels.
Whether your child is new to BJJ or already loving their time on the mat, No-Gi training is another exciting step in their martial arts journey.
