A “Smoker” is a non-sanctioned fight that usually takes place against people from other gyms or schools or academies. It is also referred to as an exhibition fight. Or think of an intense sparring session against people you don’t know. This is a way to test yourself against another opponent who is not your teammate so it feels much more real.

A smoker is typically the first step in competing in kickboxing or mixed martial arts (MMA). This allows you to get real life ring experience. As a competitor, you want to feel what it is like to have a training camp then deal with nerves, anxiety and the adrenaline rush and dump of a real match. The rules are similar but the matches are often shorter. You will likely wear more protective gear and the referees will be strict with the rules to ensure both competitors are safe.

The term “smoker” originated in the 1900’s when prizefighting was prohibited in certain areas. This gave boxers a chance to compete without getting in trouble. Now it is used as a good way for gyms to get their students experience and be able to put their skills to the test.

Your first smoker is a huge deal. All subsequent smokers are just as important. It does not go on your competition record but you should take preparing for your smokers seriously. Some smokers do not declare winners/losers but just stepping in and putting yourself out there is a win in itself.

Many students seek out High Altitude because they want to become MMA fighters. Everyone starts by taking both Jiu Jitsu and kickboxing classes in our School of Striking. Once you reach certain shirt ranks (similar to BJJ belt ranks), you will be able to spar. Once you demonstrate control and technique in sparring sessions, your coach will start looking for smokers for you to compete in. After a few smokers (and more classes, you don’t want to stop learning and getting better), they will look for kickboxing matches for you. Then you move on to competing in MMA as an ametuer and eventually turn pro. This may not be everyone’s exact path but High Altitude has produced many fighters such as Cory Sandhagen. While the road may feel long, it has been proven to work. We do not send fighters into battle unprepared. You are not only representing yourself, you are representing your coaches and academy.

On Oct 8, High Altitude is hosting its first ever Youth Kickboxing Smoker. Our youth program is a product of Christian Allen’s mastery and run by Coach Cory and Coach Ryan Solsbery. We have competed in youth kickboxing smokers around town and are excited to host our own. All academies are welcomed to sign up! Coach Cory and Coach Ryan will be in charge of match making based on size, age, and experience.

All competitors must weigh in on Friday, Oct 7th at 630pm at High Altitude. They must be checked in by 1130am on Saturday the 8th. Please invite your family and friends to come cheer you on!
