What made you get into martial arts?
While I was always involved in sports, I didn’t step on the mat until I was 18. However, when I started training at the Iowa State Judo Club, I was instantly hooked. I had never experienced the mental and physical challenges posed by martial arts. My only regret was not starting sooner!
Tell us about your journey/background/accomplishments.
For many years I exclusively trained in judo, traveling across the Midwest and the country to compete with my college Judo team. After graduating from college, I branched out by adding Russian Sambo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to my repertoire. Before long, I was training or coaching every day of the week. I continued training, teaching, and competing as much as possible for several years, culminating in my first-degree black belt in judo from my coach, Gregg Humphreys. Now I still train grappling to better myself, but now some of my most meaningful accomplishments come from helping my teammates and students grow!
What is your goal as a coach?
I strive to help my students achieve their goals and feel at home with the team at HAMA. Our gym isn’t just a place to train and sweat, it’s a home away from home.
