High Altitude Martial Arts in Aurora, CO has launched a new Judo class taught by Judo Black Belt and BJJ Brown Belt, Nate Davis.
In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, competitors start standing up. Judo’s primary way of winning is by throwing the opponent flat on their back. This same technique in a BJJ tournament or match would give you 2 points, as long as you land on top. Hip throws are a great way to score a takedown.
Leg trips are also very popular in the BJJ competition scene. It is a bit safer than a hip throw (if you were to miss it).
Other benefits of Judo training for BJJ players:
- Your ability to sweep from guard is improved once you learn to manipulate your opponent’s weight and momentum.
- Breaking the balance of a bigger, stronger opponent provides the opportunity to set up many BJJ attacks.
- Judo grips work great in BJJ. Judo believes by controlling the grip, you control the fight. Strengthening your grip game will give your better control and provide positional awareness.
- Get comfortable being the attacker and controlling the match. If no points are scored and it goes to the judges, the attacker will be deemed the winner. By controlling the pace, you force your opponent to react and be defensive.
Judo just might be that secret tool you need to be the complete grappler!
