As moms, we often wear our busyness like a badge of honor. From morning chaos to bedtime routines, we pour every ounce of energy into our families. For years, I did the same. But deep down, I felt like something was missing—a sense of me.
Then one day, I came across High Altitude Martial Arts while scrolling on Instagram and saw they offered kickboxing classes. It sounded exciting but also completely terrifying. They had pictures of the cutest little kids to shirtless sweaty men to the average mom aka me. The thought of stepping into a martial arts gym filled me with doubt. Would I look out of place? Could I even keep up? What if I failed?
Despite my fears, something told me to give it a try. What followed was a journey of transformation—inside and out—and I want to share how I overcame my hesitation, the benefits I’ve gained, and why every mom deserves to find a hobby that’s just for them.
Facing the Fear
On my first day, I parked outside the gym, staring at the entrance like it was a portal to the unknown. I almost turned around, but I reminded myself why I was doing this: I wanted to feel strong, confident, and like me again. I wished I had convinced a friend to join me that first day, but also didn’t want to use them as a crutch.
Walking in, I was immediately greeted by the front desk person, some students, and an instructor…all smiling faces. I confessed that I was new, and to my relief, everyone was incredibly welcoming. The front desk guy gave me a tour and handed me off to the instructor who walked me through the basics and assured me that everyone starts somewhere.
The first class was tough. My punches were weak, my kicks were awkward, and I was out of breath halfway through. My feet were doing some kind of weird penguin type stance and my brain wasn’t communicating to my arms and legs quickly. But instead of feeling defeated, I felt proud. I had stepped out of my comfort zone—and that was already a win. It was honestly a blast. I forgot how silly I probably looked and laughed with my partner who was very patient and kind.
Tips to Get Comfortable
If you’re a mom who’s considering something new like kickboxing, here’s what helped me ease into it:
1. Start Slow: Don’t expect to be a pro right away. It’s okay to be a beginner and take things at your own pace. Make sure to eat something, warm up, drink water, and be kind to yourself!
2. Ask Questions: The instructors and other students are there to help. Don’t hesitate to ask for tips or guidance.
3. Invest in Good Gear: Having your own gloves and comfortable workout clothes made me feel more confident. You have to look the part!
4. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection: Celebrate the small victories—whether it’s mastering a new combo or simply showing up.
5. Bring a Friend: If possible, invite another mom or friend to join you. It’s always easier (and more fun) with a buddy.
The Benefits of Kickboxing
After a few weeks of classes, I started to notice changes—not just in my body, but in my mind and spirit:
1. More Energy: Kickboxing is a great workout that left me feeling energized instead of drained.
2. Increased Patience: Hitting something became my stress reliever, and I found myself more patient with my kids.
3. Confidence Boost: Learning new skills and seeing my progress made me feel strong and capable.
4. A Stronger Body: Kickboxing is a full-body workout that improves strength, endurance, and coordination. I could feel the difference in my arms, legs, and core.
Moms Deserve a Hobby
One of the biggest lessons I learned is that it’s okay—even necessary—for moms to take time for themselves. It’s easy to feel guilty about prioritizing a hobby, but when we care for ourselves, we show up as better moms, partners, and individuals.
Kickboxing at High Altitude Martial Arts became more than just a workout; it became my outlet, my “me time,” and a reminder that I’m not just a mom—I’m a person with dreams, goals, and strength.
So to every mom out there: find something that lights you up. Whether it’s kickboxing, painting, hiking, or learning a new language, carve out time to do something for you. You deserve it, and your family will benefit from the happier, healthier version of you.
