Competition is an important part of Jiu Jitsu, but stepping onto the competition mat for the first time can feel intimidating, especially for kids. That’s exactly why we host our Youth In-House Jiu Jitsu Tournament at High Altitude Martial Arts.
Our in-house tournament gives our youth students the opportunity to experience competition in a safe, fun, familiar environment while competing alongside the teammates and coaches they train with every week.
What Is an In-House Jiu Jitsu Tournament?
An in-house tournament is a Jiu Jitsu competition exclusively for students within our academy. Instead of traveling to a large tournament filled with unfamiliar competitors, our kids get to compete against their own teammates at High Altitude.
The matches follow a tournament-style format, giving students a chance to experience what a real competition feels like, from checking in and warming up to stepping onto the mat, competing, having their hand raised, and taking home a shiny medal.
Because everything happens at their home gym, surrounded by familiar coaches, teammates, and families, it’s a great introduction to competition for kids who have never competed before.
Safe, Fun & Beginner-Friendly
The purpose of our Youth In-House Tournament isn’t just about winning.
We want kids to have fun, challenge themselves, and build confidence.
Our coaches are right there throughout the tournament to help keep matches safe and appropriate for each student’s age and experience level. Kids get the excitement of competing without the pressure that can sometimes come with a large outside tournament.
And because they’re competing against teammates, they’re testing their Jiu Jitsu against kids they already know and train with.
You can compete hard on the mat and still be friends when the match is over!
Practice for Bigger Jiu Jitsu Tournaments
For students interested in competing at tournaments outside of High Altitude, an in-house tournament is one of the best ways to prepare.
Kids get to practice the entire competition experience: managing nerves, listening to their coach, understanding scoring, working within a time limit, starting from standing, and continuing to work even when they’re tired or in a difficult position.
Then, when they attend a larger Jiu Jitsu tournament, the experience isn’t completely new.
What Does Competition Teach Kids?
Jiu Jitsu competition teaches lessons that go far beyond winning a medal.
Kids learn how to handle nerves, perform under pressure, win with humility, lose with grace, and keep going when something doesn’t go their way.
It also gives students a chance to see how their Jiu Jitsu works in a competitive setting. A match can show them what they’re doing well and what they need to work on when they return to class.
Most importantly, it teaches kids that success isn’t always about winning.
Sometimes success is simply having the courage to step onto the mat.
Compete With Your High Altitude Teammates
One of our favorite parts of an in-house tournament is watching our youth team support each other.
They’re competitors for a few minutes, but they’re still teammates.
Kids cheer for each other, coaches are there to support them, and families get to experience the community that makes High Altitude special. When the tournament is over, everyone goes back to training together with a little more experience and confidence than they had before.
