If you’ve been thinking about getting into striking, whether it’s boxing, kickboxing, or Muay Thai, it’s pretty normal to feel unsure about where to start.
A lot of people picture intense training, getting hit right away, or needing to already be in great shape before walking into a gym.
That’s not how it actually works.
At High Altitude Martial Arts, most beginners are starting from zero, and the goal is to help you build a foundation step by step in a way that feels manageable.
What is striking?
Striking is any martial art that focuses on punches, kicks, elbows, and knees.
Depending on the style, you might learn:
- Boxing, which focuses on punches and footwork
- Kickboxing, which adds kicks
- Muay Thai, which includes elbows, knees, and clinch work
Even though it looks intense from the outside, beginner classes are focused on learning movement and control, not just hitting things as hard as possible.
Do you need experience or fitness to start?
No.
You don’t need to be in shape before starting, and you definitely don’t need experience.
Most people build their conditioning as they go. Classes are designed so you can ease into it while still getting a good workout.
Everyone starts somewhere, and no one expects you to know what you’re doing on day one.
What your first class will feel like
Your first class will probably feel new, but it shouldn’t feel overwhelming.
You’ll usually start with a warm up, then go over basic movements like stance, footwork, and simple punches or kicks. After that, you’ll practice those movements on pads or bags.
In the beginning, there’s a big focus on learning how to move correctly rather than going full speed.
You’re not getting thrown into sparring right away.
Is it safe?
Yes, when it’s taught properly, it’s very safe.
Beginner classes focus on control, technique, and awareness. You’ll learn how to protect yourself, how to move safely, and how to train with partners the right way.
Sparring, if it’s included at all, is introduced gradually and always controlled.

What makes striking different
One of the things people like about striking is how direct it feels.
You can see and feel your progress pretty quickly, whether it’s your coordination improving, your balance getting better, or your punches feeling sharper.
It’s also a great way to relieve stress and build confidence in a very physical, active way.
The mental side of it
Striking isn’t just physical.
You’re learning timing, distance, and how to stay calm while you’re moving and thinking at the same time.
At first it might feel like a lot, but over time it starts to come together.
That’s where the confidence comes from.
What to look for in a gym
If you’re just starting, the environment matters a lot.
You want a place that:
- Welcomes beginners
- Focuses on teaching, not just workouts
- Has structure and clear instruction
- Doesn’t rush you into anything you’re not ready for
At High Altitude Martial Arts, the focus is on helping people build a solid foundation so they can improve safely and consistently.
The hardest part is starting
Most people spend more time thinking about starting than actually doing it.
The reality is, once you step into your first class, it’s a lot more approachable than you expected.
You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to show up.
If you’ve been thinking about trying it
If you’re in Denver and you’ve been curious about striking, there’s no perfect moment to start.
You don’t need experience.
You don’t need to be in shape.
You just need to come in and try it.
